Explore Our High-Quality Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Various flooring projects require different wood species. At Layer 12 Hardwoods, we offer different types of engineered hardwood flooring to ensure suitability to your needs, including Walnut, Cherry, White Oak, Red Oak, Tigerwood, Cherry, Teak, and other exotic wood species.

Your customer’s color preference may influence the choice of wood, so we offer multiple options. The hardness of the wood may also impact the selection process. The hardness of a wood species is a key factor in choosing wood flooring because it directly affects durability, maintenance, and overall performance. Harder woods, like hickory or oak, are more resistant to dents, scratches, and general wear, making them ideal for high-traffic areas or homes with kids and pets. Softer woods, like pine or fir, are more prone to damage and may show marks more easily, making them better suited for low-traffic spaces or areas where a rustic look is desired. Harder woods tend to expand and contract less, making them more stable in fluctuating temperatures or humidity levels.

A Quick Guide on the Different Grades of Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring options come in different grades and are determined according to mineral streaks, color variations, and durability. This classification tends to affect the hardwood’s market price. While grading doesn’t determine quality or durability, it significantly affects the aesthetic. Character and Rustic grades are available upon request and lumber will have to be specially ordered for your project.

French Oak grading:

High-quality, clean boards with minimal knots. Uniform grain and color consistency. Straight grain with little to no natural defects. Ideal for contemporary and modern designs requiring a refined look.

Contains small, sound knots (usually under ½” in diameter). Slight variation in color and grain. Some minor mineral streaks or occasional pinholes are allowed. Provides a balanced mix of clean and natural character.

A combination of Prime and A Grade boards. Slightly larger knots, minor natural imperfections. More color variation than Prime grade. Popular for a natural yet elegant appearance.

Larger knots (filled or unfilled), cracks, and more grain variation. Significant color variations and more sapwood allowed. Some filled cracks and checks are common.  Provides a more natural, character-rich look.

Heavy grain variation, larger knots, cracks, and open defects. Sapwood and heartwood variations are present. More rustic, natural, and aged appearance. Preferred for reclaimed or farmhouse-style projects.

White Oak grading:

The highest quality grade with minimal character marks. Very few knots, if any, and uniform grain patterns. Consistent color with little variation. Ideal for modern and contemporary designs requiring a clean, refined look.

Slightly more natural variation than Clear Grade. Small, tight knots (usually less than ¼”). Some minor color variations and occasional mineral streaks. A balance of elegance and natural character, often used in high-end applications.

More natural characteristics like larger knots, mineral streaks, and color variation. Some checks (small splits) and wormholes may be present. Offers a warm, authentic, and slightly rustic look. Popular for residential and commercial spaces looking for natural charm.

More pronounced character, including open knots, larger color variations, checks, and possible sapwood. A strong, natural appearance with a rustic and aged feel. Often chosen for farmhouse, reclaimed, or distressed flooring styles.

UV-cured finishes are among the most durable and efficient finishes for hardwood flooring, offering instant curing, high resistance to wear, and excellent customization options. They are applied in controlled environments (factories or on-site with portable UV lights) and cured instantly under ultraviolet (UV) light. Here are the most common types of UV-cured hardwood floor finishes:

UV-Cured Polyurethane

  • Composition: A high-performance polyurethane blend that hardens under UV light.
  • Durability: Highly resistant to scratches, chemicals, and wear.
  • Appearance: Available in matte, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss sheens.
  • Best For: Residential, commercial, and high-traffic areas.
  • Pros: Instant curing, long lifespan, low maintenance.
  • Cons: Difficult to repair if damaged.

UV-Cured Aluminum Oxide Finish

  • Composition: Polyurethane combined with aluminum oxide particles for extra hardness.
  • Durability: One of the most scratch-resistant finishes available.
  • Appearance: Available in various sheens but often slightly textured.
  • Best For: Prefinished engineered flooring, commercial applications.
  • Pros: Ultra-durable, low maintenance, long-lasting.
  • Cons: Cannot be easily refinished; requires plank replacement if damaged.

UV-Cured Hardwax Oil

  • Composition: A blend of natural oils and waxes hardened with UV light.
  • Durability: Stronger than traditional hardwax oil but not as tough as polyurethane.
  • Appearance: Matte to Satin, highlighting the natural grain of the wood.
  • Best For: High-end engineered flooring, boutique retail spaces, and residential projects.
  • Pros: Natural feel, spot-repairable, enhances wood texture.
  • Cons: Requires occasional reapplication for best performance.

UV-Cured Water-Based Finish

  • Composition: A water-based resin finish cured with UV light.
  • Durability: Stronger than traditional water-based polyurethane but slightly softer than aluminum oxide finishes.
  • Appearance: Clear, non-yellowing, available in matte to gloss sheens.
  • Best For: Residential and light-commercial spaces.
  • Pros: Low VOCs, eco-friendly, enhances wood’s natural color.
